The heart is an electro-mechanical system in which, under normal conditions, electrical waves propagate in a coordinated manner to initiate an efficient contraction. In pathological states, a variety of nonlinear phenomena can arise over a variety of scales, such as complex spatio-temporal patterns corresponding to spiral and scroll waves of electrical activity in two and three dimensions. This minisymposium brings together various kinds of expertise in the field of cardiac tissue modeling. A broad spectrum of topics will be covered ranging from deep mathematical theory of spiral waves to sophisticated numerical and experimental approaches. Among the main topics are spiral wave (in)stability, spiral wave (dis)appearance, and their electrophysiological and medical implications.
